We do not often think of ways to protect our brain other than from a physical perspective with things like helmets and airbags.  When you consider that our brain is our most valuable asset that controls everything you do, maybe it’s time we spend a bit more time thinking about brain health.  Let us look at changing some of them to keep your brain strong and healthy.

Not Sleeping Enough:

Not getting enough sleep is one of the worst things you can do to your brain.  Without enough sleep, your brain does not recover and rest from the day before. This can lead to cognitive decline, memory loss, and mood swings.  Show your brain some love and get at least 7 hours of sleep a night.

Smoking:

Smoking damages blood vessels and causes chronic inflammation.  This can lead to stroke and cognitive decline.  People who smoke are also twice as likely to develop dementia.

Spending Too Much Time Alone:

We all need some alone time but too much can be just as bad as not sleeping enough. Socialization is important for your brain’s health. Being around people stimulates the brain and without it you increase the risk of depression, anxiety, and even dementia.

Being Too Stationary:

Being too stationary can lead to obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.  All of these problems can damage your brain and increase the risk of dementia.  Walking just 30 minutes three times a week can make a difference.

Overeating:

Even if you eat healthy, overeating can hurt your brain.  Overeating can lead to memory loss and cognitive decline in older adults.

Eating Too Much Junk Food:

Junk food is loaded with sugars and calories, which can lead to obesity and diabetes, which can damage your brain.  It has been found that people who consume higher amounts of fries, potato chips, hamburgers, and soft drinks have smaller parts of the brain associated with learning, memory, and mental health.  Junk food actually shrinks your brain’s learning capacity.

Blasting Your Headphones:

Blasting your headphones could damage your hearing and once it is damaged, it is permanently lost. People with hearing loss tend to be more likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Spending Too Much Time In The Dark:

Your brain needs exposure to sunlight, going without it can lead to seasonal affective disorder and depression.

 

 

Negative Thinking:

Negative thinking can damage your brain.  Being constantly stressed and anxious affects mental health and can lead to depression, anxiety, and dementia.

Ignoring Your Health Issues:

Not addressing health issues such as hypertension can increase the risk of dementia.  Not treating depression or diabetes is also harmful to your brain.
