The snow has arrived and that means the presence of natural foliage is gone.  For many of us leaves, flowers, plants, and grasses provide a sense of calm and comfort.  Thankfully, there are indoor plants that can help you to feel calm and happy and provide some other heath benefits. These health benefits include:

Allergy relief:

Research has found that rooms with plants have less dust and mold than rooms without plants.  The plants act as a filter to catch allergens and other airborne particulates.  Plants: Chinese evergreen, Peace lily, violets

Houseplants can provide moisture to a dry winter home, limiting your chances of getting dry skin, or catching a cold. Plants: Spider plants

Air Purifier:

Many indoor objects including paint, cleaners, print toners and ink, give off pollutants called volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  VOCs can build up in the air and irritate your eye and skin, worsen asthma, and make it hard to breathe.  Houseplants can absorb VOCs and act as an air purifier. Plants:  English Ivy, asparagus fern, dragon tree

Better Sleep:

Plants take in carbon dioxide and give off oxygen and extra oxygen can help you sleep better.  Plants: gerbera daisies

Other plants to consider having around the house:

There is nothing better than cooking with fresh herbs and many thrive indoors. Plants: mint, basil, cilantro, parsley, rosemary, sage, lemongrass

The gel from the aloe plant can help treat sunburns, and other minor burns.  It can also soothe psoriasis and other skin conditions

Heart-leaf philodendron, snake plant, golden pothos, orchids:

Sometimes it is just about having plants around to feel calm and lessen depression.  This calming effect can help lower blood pressure, and reduce stress, and anxiety.
